The 2018 Hyundai Sonata Dominates the Competition

Here at Buerkle Hyundai, we know you've heard us go on and on about how great we think our Hyundai-built vehicles are. We've been telling drivers in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area that our Hyundai models are tops for a long time.

But, sometimes, we need to put our money where our mouths are, and prove it. Here, you can find an in-depth analysis of our favorite mid-sized Hyundai sedan, the 2018 Sonata, against one if its main competitors, the 2018 Toyota Camry.

While both sedans offer four doors, seating for five people, and many innovative safety features, the Sonata comes out ahead of the Camry in several important areas. If you're torn between these two similar-but-different cars, let us help you make your decision easier.

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata vs. the 2018 Toyota Camry

  • Features. While both the Toyota Camry and the Hyundai Sonata come equipped with an excellent roster of advanced safety features, the Sonata offers more tech and creature comfort amenities. In fact, every single Sonata in the lineup comes equipped with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, while not a single Camry model has it available even as an option. Additionally, some Sonata features, including power-folding front mirrors, are only available on the upper, more expensive, Camry trims.
  • Hybrid options. For drivers who like the option of a fuel-sipping, emissions-reducing hybrid powertrain, the Hyundai Sonata gives you more choice. While both sedans have a traditional hybrid in their lineup, only the Sonata has a plug-in hybrid, which allows you to go farther on electric-only power, and averages even better fuel economy.
  • Gas-powered engine options. In addition to giving drivers in White Bear Lake, and beyond, more hybrid-powered engine choices, the 2018 Hyundai Sonata also gives you more options for a regular, gas-powered engine. The Camry has just two engines, either a 4-cylinder for the lower trims, or an optional V6 for the upper two trims. The 2018 Sonata, meanwhile, gives drivers the choice between three engines. There's a 185-horsepower 4-cylinder for the lower trims, a 245-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder for the top two, and an Eco option that's rated for 178 horsepower.
  • Cargo and passenger space. While both of these sedans are considered "mid-sized," and both have similar dimensions, the 2018 Hyundai Sonata actually gives drivers in Roseville and Inver Grove Heights more room for both their passengers, and their cargo. There's more headroom, legroom, and shoulder room inside the passenger cabin, especially in the front seat. Also, the Sonata trunk holds more than 16 cubic feet of cargo, compared to just 14 cubic feet of available space in the Camry trunk.
  • Fuel capacity and range. The 2018 Hyundai Sonata also saves you money and time by giving you a greater fuel tank capacity and a broader range per fill up when compared to the Toyota Camry. The Sonata holds a lot more gas in its tank than the Camry, saving you time stopping at gas stations for refueling. Plus, the Sonata has a range of 463 in the city and 666 miles on the highway per tank of gas, compared to the Camry, which has a range of 421 in the city and 595 miles on the highway per tank.
