The 2018 Hyundai Kona is the subcompact crossover SUV from Hyundai many drivers in the Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN area have been waiting for. It seats five people comfortably and offers a ton of useful storage space, all in an easy-to-drive, compact frame.
But, of course, the 2018 Hyundai Kona isn't the only subcompact crossover vying for attention from drivers in the Roseville, MN area. Several other well-known carmakers also offer similar vehicles, among them, the popular 2018 Mazda CX-3.
If you're considering a new subcompact crossover, and you're wondering how the new Kona stacks up against the competition, let us help. Here, we've pit our Kona against the 2018 Mazda CX-3, to see which model comes out ahead.
Side-By-Side Comparisons of the Hyundai Kona and the Mazda CX-3
The experts at Buerkle Hyundai have come up with a number of reasons why drivers in the White Bear Lake and Brooklyn Park areas should consider the Hyundai Kona first, including:
- More engine power and options. The Hyundai Kona can come powered by one of two great engines, either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that's rated for 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque (which comes standard on the first couple of trim levels), or a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that offers 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque (standard on the top trims). The Mazda CX-3, on the other hand, doesn't allow drivers to upgrade engines as they move up trim levels. All CX-3 models are powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, with an output of 146 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. Not only does this take away the driver's choice, it also offers less power than both of the Hyundai options.
- Superior interior space. Although both the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3 are both considered subcompact SUVs and both have similar exterior dimensions, the Mazda can't compare to the Hyundai when it comes to interior room. The Hyundai Kona maximizes its space, offering more headroom, legroom, elbow room, and cargo room than the Mazda CX-3. In fact, the Hyundai Kona cargo hold can help you tote more than 19 cubic feet of gear. But, the Mazda CX-3 cargo hold can only hold around 12 cubic feet.
- Hyundai has your back. The Hyundai warranty is legendary, and the carmaker backs up the Kona drivetrains for 10 years or 100,000, and they offer drivers roadside assistance for 5 years and an unlimited number of miles. Comparatively, the Mazda warranty isn't as comprehensive, and they only offer roadside assistance for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
- Wider availability of safety features. With either the Mazda CX-3 or the Hyundai Kona, drivers can opt to equip their crossover with innovative safety features that are designed to keep them safe and help them avoid accidents. However, on the Mazda, only drivers who splurge for the top trim, the Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring, are eligible for the optional package that includes these features. But, the Hyundai Kona model's top trim, the Kona Ultimate, includes these features as standard equipment, and other trims are also eligible to add them on if drivers choose to.
